Budget overruns The film went significantly over its initial budget, partly due to delays and complications related to Belushi’s erratic behavior. 4. “Cocaine budget” rumor / acknowledgement There are multiple reports, including from Aykroyd, that some portion of the film’s budget was (informally) used to acquire cocaine for night shoots. It’s not clear how formal or documented that was, but it’s part of the lore.

1. Belushi’s drug use during filming Belushi was heavily using cocaine (and other substances) during the production. This is attested by director John Landis, Dan Aykroyd, Carrie Fisher, and other sources. 2. Delays due to Belushi’s behavior He often missed call times (the scheduled start of the filming day).
